SEO vs SEM Comparison

Search engine marketing is the technique of marketing a webpage for Internet search engines. This involves a marketing campaign that includes a variety of processes and functions. SEM includes a comprehensive search engine marketing campaign with the goal of improving page ranking. A good example of SEM is putting up advertisements for your website through Google AdWords.
 

SEO
Search Engine Optimization is an element of the SEM process. SEO is optimizing a webpage for search engine listings that are both natural and organic. SEO is a highly cost-effective option for businesses that want to improve their search engine rankings, without having to incorporate paid search listings. 
There are many terms used in Internet marketing – the biggest two being search engine optimization and search engine marketing – but what are the differences in SEO vs SEM?

PPC and SEO have the potential to be the two most effective online marketing tools today. But these have different means to gain traffic. Yes, SEO is a great way to have consistent traffic coming to your site, while PPC gives instant traffic for your website. Either way, it takes expertise for these processes to be effective.
SEO vs SEM can be seen as a question – are these two terms actually the same thing? They sound similar – search engine optimization vs search engine marketing, but they actually refer to two different parts of the same marketing scheme. SEM is a much broader term than SEO, and actually includes SEO as one of its techniques. SEM is all that a company can do to advertise itself on a search engine, including paid inclusion and other ads.
The page that is brought up when a search engine is used is referred to as a SERP – a search engine result page. On this SERP, there are several different types of results. Using Google's SERP as an example, there are paid ads that are related to your search on the sides of the SERP, and paid inclusion (kind of like cutting to the front of the line) results at the top. If you choose to pay for any of these special results on a SERP, or even just pay for an ad on a SERP, this is an example of search engine marketing.

Improve Online Traffic: Both SEO and SEM boost brand awareness online. They have a similar goal of improving online traffic to websites. They are both part of a marketing campaign, since SEO is a part of SEM strategy. It is important to note that the terms SEO and SEM should not be used interchangeably. They are two different things – but both practices can help your website to become a success, if used properly and with good judgment.
